Dili - Dili - On April 30, 2026, many parents of preschool children in Akanunu and Balibar will experience something new: a tangible sense of childhood education. Through parent learning sessions combined with access to reading materials from the Mobile Library, families are introduced to the “texture” of learning in a way they have never encountered before., many parents of preschool-aged children in Akanunu and Balibar experienced something new: a tangible sense of early childhood education. Through parenting learning sessions combined with access to reading materials from the Mobile Library, families were introduced to the “texture” of learning in a way they had never encountered before.

These sessions were intentionally designed by the Ministry of Education to engage parents, raise awareness about the importance of early education, and help them recognize their own role in supporting their children’s development at home. Parents and children participated together in interactive activities, sharing laughter during storytelling, observing their toddlers’ concentration while solving puzzles, and enjoying the simple closeness of sitting side by side. Each session concluded with open discussions, where families reflected on their experiences and explored practical ways to support learning at home.

Facilitators emphasized that this effort goes beyond school preparation; it is about honouring the “Golden Age” of early childhood. The message was clear and urgent: a child is only between the ages of 3 and 5 once. This critical window of brain development is a golden opportunity that cannot be recovered if missed.

At the heart of the sessions was a powerful conversation about investment. Many parents expressed concern about limited financial resources, but representatives from the Ministry of Education, the National Pre-School Directorate, and UNICEF Timor-Leste shared an empowering perspective:
• 𝙏𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙮: Supporting a child’s development does not require expensive toys or modern technology.
• 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚: A father spending 15 minutes playing on the dirt floor or a mother telling a traditional story while cooking can have a deeper impact on a child’s cognitive and emotional development than any paid service.
• 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣 𝙣𝙤𝙬: By engaging in play and learning today, parents are building a strong foundation for their children’s future, one that increases the likelihood of staying in school, contributing to their communities, and breaking cycles of poverty.

“Positive parental engagement through our Mobile Library is reaching communities and making a real impact,” said Noemia Harmonica de Jesus, Chief of Department from the Preschool Directorate. “Parents are telling us these visits provide the ‘WAAOH’ moments they need. Beyond stories, we are sharing practical, play-based learning strategies that families can immediately use at home. It’s inspiring to see how these brief visits empower parents to turn everyday moments into meaningful learning opportunities.”

The use of the Mobile Library represents more than access to books; it is a commitment to inclusive learning. It reinforces the idea that education belongs to everyone and strengthens partnerships with parents and caregivers, especially for children without access to formal preschool.
As the sun set over the hills, parents left with more than new knowledge. They carried a renewed sense of identity. No longer just providers of food and shelter, they embraced their role as their children’s first and most important teachers. The Mobile Library access did more than deliver books, games, and toys; it revealed a powerful truth: the most valuable resource for a child’s future has always been within reach, the love, time, and presence of their family.
