Technical-Vocational Secondary School

Technical-vocational secondary education (Ensino Secundário Técnico-Vocacional, ESTV) is the professional track of secondary education, covering Grades 10 to 12 for graduates of basic education.

Purpose

ESTV schools prepare young people for skilled employment and for further technical study, combining general secondary subjects with hands-on training in workshops, laboratories and school farms. The track responds directly to Timor-Leste’s development needs, building the technical workforce called for in the Strategic Development Plan 2011–2030.

Areas of Training

Technical-vocational schools across the country offer programmes in fields such as:

  • Agriculture, livestock and fisheries
  • Civil construction and engineering trades
  • Electricity, electronics and mechanics
  • Administration, commerce and finance
  • Tourism and hospitality
  • Information and communication technologies

Investing in ESTV

The Ministry continues to invest in ESTV facilities so that students from rural areas can study close to home , including student dormitories such as the one recently delivered to the ESTV school in Alas Dotik, Manufahi. The Ministry also works with partners on curriculum modernisation, teacher upgrading and digital skills, including the EPRG digital education programme.

Pathways

ESTV graduates may enter the labour market, continue to polytechnic and higher technical education, or pursue university study. Guidance on admissions is available from schools and municipal education directorates , see School Admissions.
