Competitions & Olympiads

The Ministry of Education promotes academic competitions, olympiads and school sport as powerful ways to develop student talent, motivation and national pride.

Science and Mathematics Competitions

Schools across Timor-Leste take part in national and international science and mathematics competitions. In one national event in Manufahi, fifty schools from basic, secondary and higher education competed in science and mathematics. Timorese students also participate in the International STEM Olympiad, an online competition open to students from Grade 1 to Grade 12. With UNESCO support, the Ministry has strengthened mathematics and science teaching with national textbooks, workbooks and teacher guides , building the foundation for olympiad success.

Language and Talent Competitions

Students compete in Portuguese and English speech and discourse contests, reading competitions and cultural showcases organised with schools, institutes and partners , opportunities to build confidence in the languages of instruction and beyond.

Chess and Mind Sports

The Chess Federation of Timor-Leste has launched school chess programmes for general secondary schools, giving students a sport that develops critical thinking and strategic reasoning.

School Sport

School sport is being revitalised in cooperation with sporting federations and international frameworks such as the ASEAN School Games, so that physical education and competition become part of every student’s school experience.
