Recurrent School

Recurrent education gives young people and adults who missed out on formal schooling a second chance to learn , a constitutional commitment and a pillar of the National Education Strategic Plan’s goal to eliminate illiteracy in Timor-Leste.

Who It Serves

Recurrent education is designed for people who never attended school, left school early, or wish to complete a level of education later in life. Programmes are delivered nationwide under the National Directorate for Recurrent Education.

Programmes

Literacy

National literacy campaigns and community literacy classes teach reading, writing and numeracy to adults, with the goal of full literacy for young adults aged 15–24 under the NESP 2011–2030.

Equivalency Education

The National Equivalency Programme allows learners to earn certificates equivalent to basic education. Participants may enrol if they are between 15 and 17 years old and have been out of primary or pre-secondary school for more than 12 months, or are over 17 and did not complete primary education. Courses cover the core subjects of the basic education curriculum, adapted for youth and adult learners.

Lifelong Learning

Beyond literacy and equivalency, the Ministry promotes continuing education so that all citizens can keep developing knowledge and skills throughout life, in line with the Education System Framework Law (Law No. 14/2008).

How to Enrol

Community learning centres and municipal education directorates can advise on literacy classes and equivalency enrolment in your area. Announcements about programme intakes are published in the Announcements section.
